" CEMF Salon | Design Innovation's Response to Dual Carbon Goals"
Sep 10, 2022

On August 20, 2022, the first salon of the China Energy Modeling Forum "Energy Transformation Promotes Smart Green Building" was successfully held online. The meeting invited Chen Chao, deputy director and project director of Perkins&Will|SHL Architects The teacher shared "The Response of Innovative Design to the Double Carbon Target".

Mr. Chen Chao emphasized the importance of construction decision-making and design in the early stage of construction project emission reduction. The design process begins with an understanding of energy benchmarks for the project site. The energy-saving model system SPEED developed by Perkins&Will can help understand project energy consumption in the early design stage. Then through the optimization of each step, cooperate with other professionals, and finally achieve the goal of low-carbon or zero-carbon design.

Chen Chao demonstrated the design strategy towards zero carbon in building operations:

01

Passive strategy: Design high-performance building envelope, balance lighting and glare, pay attention to building volume and shape, and realize efficient layout and use of space. The façade is designed with high-efficiency external sun shading, and natural ventilation measures are provided as much as possible in suitable seasons and time periods.

02

Active strategies: use efficient air conditioning systems, such as radiant heating and cooling, electrification of cold and heat sources and hot water systems, to achieve clean and efficient heating and cooling effects; and use ground source heat pumps to share energy consumption and store excess heat; waste heat recovery; and use ultra-low or no-global-warming refrigerants.

03

Operation strategy: Realize building emission reduction through induction control, energy-saving office and household appliances, and building energy consumption control system; and encourage personnel to optimize their usage habits.

04

Energy source analysis: Avoid using natural gas energy and consider prioritizing the use of renewable energy for heating, cooling and domestic hot water.

05

Find other carbon-free energy sources: Minimize electricity use in grid areas with a high proportion of non-green electricity, and look for various carbon-free energy sources.

06

Renewable Energy: Prioritize forms of renewable energy on site.

Chen Chao further introduced the design strategy towards zero embodied carbon in buildings:

01

Early Design Decisions: Clear and defined project goals and scope need to be established at the beginning of the project to guide the complex and comprehensive collaboration of all parties and build a knowledge base of technology and materials.

02

Recycling strategies to avoid additional carbon emissions: Reuse parts as much as possible in the design, use recycled and recyclable materials, and pay attention to the detachability and durability of decoration materials.

03

Decision-making with a comprehensive grasp of material characteristics: focus on the type and quantity of materials, and conduct LCA analysis of the project's full life cycle during the design process to determine the types of materials that have a significant impact on embodied carbon.

04

Carry out preliminary assumptions: On the basis of clarifying the impact of material types on emissions, implement design goals and expectations during the procurement stage.

05

Offset the remaining carbon footprint: Adopt an overall project carbon sequestration strategy to offset the remaining carbon footprint to achieve carbon neutrality.

Director Chen Chao finally said that if we make full use of professional and creative architectural design, and uphold the original intention of respecting nature and loving the earth, the construction industry will definitely be able to support the realization of the double carbon goal.
